Deciding what deserves your energy
One of the unexpected pleasures of getting older is realising you do not have to care about everything equally.
Setting boundaries is one way of deciding what deserves your energy and what does not.
That is what I mean by giving fewer Fs.
Not becoming rude. Not becoming selfish. Just becoming more selective about what deserves your time, attention and energy.
For many women, the habit of being useful is deeply ingrained. We organise, smooth things over, solve problems, say yes and then wonder why we feel permanently depleted.
So I have started asking different questions.
What matters to me?
What am I saying yes to because I genuinely want to?
Where am I spending energy trying to manage somebody else’s opinion?
What would happen if ‘no’ did not require a three-paragraph explanation?
Healthy boundaries are not about caring less. They can be a way of protecting enough energy for the people and things you care about most.
There will always be somebody who would have chosen differently.
They are allowed.
You are allowed too.
This links closely with what success means to you now, because protecting what matters usually means deciding what does not get your time.
Your future self does not need you to win universal approval. She needs you to build a life that still feels like yours.
