Four things I keep coming back to
My mornings are rarely perfect, and I do not think yours need to be either.
A healthy morning routine does not need to be perfect or complicated to be useful.
There are four areas I keep returning to when I think about looking after my future self: movement, strength, fuel and rest.
Move. This can be as simple as a walk, some stretching or ten minutes of something that gets your body moving.
Strength. As we get older, maintaining strength becomes increasingly useful for everyday life. I want to keep carrying my shopping, getting up from the floor and doing the things I enjoy for as long as I can.
Fuel. I try to think less about dieting and more about giving my body what it needs: regular meals, enough protein and plants, and remembering the basics such as water.
Rest. Recovery is part of looking after ourselves, not the reward we earn after everything else is finished.
Some days I manage all four brilliantly. Some days I don’t.
The point is not a perfect routine. The point is having a few anchors I can return to when life gets busy.
If you want to make one of these anchors easier to repeat, my piece on habit stacking gives practical examples.
Your future self is not built by one immaculate morning. She is shaped by the ordinary choices you make often enough to matter.
Fancy getting out of your own head for a bit?
