Motherhood changes shape
Nobody really tells you how strange it can feel when the children you spent years teaching to become independent actually become independent.
When sons are small, they need you for everything.
Then one day they have jobs, homes, partners, responsibilities and a life that does not require your management.
That is success, of course.
It can still feel odd.
I have learned that connection with adult sons may not always look like long phone calls and constant updates. Sometimes love is practical. A message asking if you need anything. Turning up to fix something. A quick heart on a text.
The harder adjustment can be our own role.
I like the idea of moving from manager to consultant.
Advice is available, but it does not have to arrive uninvited.
Support is there, but without keeping score.
And while their lives expand, ours need to expand too.
Motherhood is part of who I am. It is not the whole of who I am.
This stage can be an invitation to ask what else belongs in your life now: friendships, work, volunteering, travel, walking, learning, strength, creativity or something you have not even tried yet.
A change in role can also expose old beliefs and changing identity, while trying new things can help the next chapter feel expansive rather than smaller.
Their independence does not have to mean your life has become smaller.
