Are you running old beliefs on a new life?
Every so often my phone tells me it needs a software update.
It made me wonder how many of us are trying to run our current lives using beliefs we downloaded decades ago.
Be good. Do not make a fuss. Put everybody else first. Resting is lazy. Do not disappoint anyone.
Some of those rules may still matter to you. Others might have become outdated.
The tricky bit is that beliefs can start to feel like facts when we have repeated them for long enough.
‘I am not sporty.’
‘I am too old.’
‘I am just someone who puts everyone else first.’
But is that your identity, or is it a sentence you have practised?
Life can bring a lot of change: children grow up, careers shift, priorities move and old roles stop fitting in the same way.
Instead of asking ‘Who am I now?’ as though everything has disappeared, I find it more useful to ask:
What qualities have always travelled with me?
Curiosity. Kindness. Determination. Humour. Creativity. Reliability.
Roles can change while those qualities find somewhere new to live.
A personal software update is not about becoming a completely different person.
If you want to look more closely at the stories you keep repeating about yourself, read my piece on self limiting beliefs.
It is about checking whether the rules you are still following belong to the life you are trying to build now.
